The role of Web Designers varies depending on the size and nature of the company that employs them. Some designers have overall control of all aspects design and programming; others may oversee the development of design plans.

Web Designers are primarily concerned with the design and development of web sites for customers wanting a presence on the Internet for various commercial or marketing purposes. The designer works closely with the customer to create a web site that meets the customer's needs and specification. Designers are often required to provide advice based on technical issues to those who do not fully understand I.T. issues. The size and complexity of site design needs to be fully understood and approached carefully to provide a popular and effective site.

A designer will be commissioned to produce a web site and then provide ideas and designs that meet the specifications of the customer in terms of purpose and, for example, the corporate image of the organisation. Web Designers may also be involved in hosting and marketing the site. Continued development and updating of the site are often tasks in which designers are involved.
Web sites are increasingly becoming complex in terms of technical features such as integrated databases and so on.

Many simple sites do exist but as the WWW has become so popular, the demands on web designers are becoming much more demanding than providing graphically pleasing sites. It is essential that a web designer fully understands XHTML, html, CSS, internet protocols to start with, not to metion all the other bits of skill and knowledge that can be gathered through time.
